Check rides conducted at locations other than Albany will be subject to additional travel fees if the check ride is not completed due to a discontinuance or paperwork issue that is unable to be resolved.

Please coordinate with your instructor to make sure your paperwork (logbook documenting required aeronautical experience, ground training, endorsements, aircraft paperwork, etc.) is in order. You may utilize the referenced information below to help you with this. If you are unsure about your endorsements or experience requirements, please contact me and I can review your information before your check ride.

New scheduling information:

Years ago, a CFI asked me if I’d ever consider only scheduling applicants that were “ready to go” – meaning they had all their training complete, required endorsements, etc. At the time, it didn’t really appeal to me. Over the past couple years I’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of cancellations for a variety of reasons – training couldn’t be completed due to weather/maintenance, illness, vacation schedules, etc. This has resulted in approximately 50% of scheduled check rides being moved – which means I’m sitting at home when I could be conducting a check ride. I get it – flight training (especially during the winter months) has a lot of variables and trying to pin down when you’ll be ready for your check ride weeks ahead of time can be difficult. I’ve also heard from many applicants that are prepared for a check ride only have to wait weeks until they can get one scheduled.

So, I figured I’d give it a shot. I’m going to try only scheduling check rides for folks that are “ready to go” – meaning you have been completely signed off in IACRA by your instructor and 141 school, if required and have your required endorsements. Anyone who schedules a check ride without these items complete will immediately be cancelled. Furthermore, I’ll only open slots within 48 hours of the check ride, when weather forecasts have a reasonable chance of being correct. We’ll see how this goes! Hopefully it will reduce check ride wait time, increase efficiency, and result in a better experience for applicants.
